Unique jewelry made from lunar-used hardware.

Apollo 16 Lunar Module Flown and Surface-Used Penetrometer Screws. A necklace and a pair of earrings, each bearing a clear acrylic crescent moon containing half of a 0.625" long screw removed from the penetrometer used on the surface of the moon during the Apollo 16 mission. This scientific device, used on Apollo 14-16, measures the relationship between applied force and depth of penetration. It was self-recording and, after the lunar tests, would be returned to Earth for scientists to read and analyze the data. Certainly a one-of-a-kind relic. Excellent condition.

Included with this lot is a signed letter of authenticity from its owner, in full: "Regarding the Jewelry (screws in polymer-necklace & earrings- My father, Louis E. Normand worked at NASA in Houston from 1965-1977. He was a Master Machinist and worked out of Building 10, the 'heavy machine shop'. During his years at NASA he built the Penetrometers which were taken to the moon during Apollo 14, 15 & 16. When Apollo 16 returned to earth in April of 1972, the Penetrometer utilized during the moon-landing was returned to him in the shop. He cleaned it up so that it could be sent to the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum in Washington, D.C. One of the things he did was to remove the screws and put in new ones. He took the screws that had been to the moon, sliced them in half and molded them in to the acrylic/polymer and made them into the jewelry for me. The jewelry was given to me for my birthday in June of 1973."
