    Description

Apollo 14 Flown State Flag of Massachusetts Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Edgar Mitchell, Signed and Certified, with Signed LOA. This 6.125" x 4.5" silk flag was carried aboard Apollo 14, the third successful moon landing mission, with crewmembers Alan Shepard, Stuart Roosa, and Edgar Mitchell, January 31-February 9, 1971. This flag design, official since 1908, bears the state motto: "Ense Petit Placidam, Sub Libertate Quietem (By the Sword We Seek Peace, But Peace Only Under Liberty). Dr. Mitchell has signed the flag at the bottom: "Edgar Mitchell/ Flown to the moon on Kittyhawk, Apollo 14". Excellent condition with just some barely-noticeable soiling at the edges, mentioned for accuracy.

Included with this lot is a letter of authenticity signed "Edgar Mitchell" on his personal letterhead, stating (in part): "This silk state flag of Massachusetts was flown to the moon aboard the Apollo 14 command module Kittyhawk, January 31 to February 9, 1991 [sic] during the third lunar landing at Fra Mauro... Alan Shepard, Stewart [sic] and I carried a small group of national and state flags during our mission. I have authenticated that this flag was flown on Apollo 14 and signed on the bottom margin."

    Learn about consigning with us

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
