Description

Soyuz 9 Photo Album Inscribed and Signed on the cover by the crew, Andriyan Nikolayev and Vitaly Sevastyanov, "To Ivan Borisenko . . . flight of Soyuz 9, Pilot Cosmonauts." This album is 11.75" x 8.5" and is in very fine condition. It contains six color and seventeen B&W photos of the arrival and pre-launch activities at Baikonur Cosmodrome. Printed in Russian on the olive green cover, "Soyuz 9, Cosmodrome, June 1970."

These images are from the first endurance flight of the space program. For almost eighteen days - from June 1, until June 19, 1970 - the crew of Soyuz 9 remained in their capsule. The pictures included in the album were taken mostly at Baikonur, the top secret location of the launch, by government photographers. These were top secret photos of the events, beginning with the crews' arrival at the Cosmodrome. Subjects include the preparation of the launch, the government commission and participants that were responsible for the flight, activities on the launch pad, journey to the launch pad, the rocket ready for launch, and more. All of these pictures could not - and most never would - be exposed to the public because of the top-secret designation placed on them by the U.S.S.R. government for over thirty-five years. This album was made for one of the participants present at the launch; he had top secret government clearance to have these photos in his possession.
