Description

Soyuz 17 Photograph Album Inscribed and Signed by Commander Aleksei Gubarev, "To Ivan Gringorivich Borisenko, great and fond memories at the Cosmodrome 'Baikonur' and at the recovery, Commander of the Spaceflight, 'Soyuz 17 Salyut 4', A. Gubarev, April 4, 1975." This album is 11.75" x 8.5" and is in very fine condition.

This blue-bound album of secret Soviet photographs contains ten pages, all autographed either on the photo or the album next to the photo. There are four B&W and six color photos of the arrival and pre-launch activities, with images of the generals with commission board at Baikonur Cosmodrome. This spaceflight was the first of two long-duration missions to the Soviet Union's Salyut 4 space station in 1975. The flight set a Soviet-mission duration record of 29 days, surpassing the 23-day record set by the ill-fated Soyuz 11 crew aboard Salyut 1 in 1971.

The pictures included in the album were taken mostly at Baikonur, the top secret location of launch, by government photographers. These were top secret photos of the events, beginning with the crews' arrival at the Cosmodrome. Subjects include the preparation of the launch, the government commission and participants that were responsible for the flight, activities on the launch pad, journey to the launch pad, the rocket ready for launch, and more. All of these pictures could not - and most never would - be exposed to the public because of the top-secret designation placed on them by the U.S.S.R. government for over thirty-five years. This album was made for one of the participants present at the launch; he had top secret government clearance to have these photos in his possession.
