Skylab II (SL-3) Flown Bar of Soap Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Pilot Jack Lousma, Signed and Certified. A 3" x 2" x 0.875" soap bar in a foil wrapper. There is no part of serial number information. The circular raised part in the middle of the bar of soap is a metal insert that allowed the soap to adhere to a magnetic holder so the soap would not fly away. Lousma has signed: "Soap/ Flown on Skylab II/ Jack/ Lousma". Very good condition with general wear; one end has come unsealed.

A news release from the Marshall Space Flight Center dated May 3, 1972, announced the development of a shower system for the Skylab station: "A compact shower assembly for use on Skylab Earth-orbital missions was designed and built at MSFC. The shower remained stored on the floor when not in use. Astronauts would step inside a ring on the floor and raise a fireproof beta cloth curtain on a hoop and attach it to the ceiling. A flexible hose with push-button shower nozzle could spray 2.8 liters of water from the personal hygiene tank during each bath. Used water would be vacuumed from the shower enclosure into a disposable bag and deposited in the waste tank."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
