RMS Titanic: Pocket Watch Owned by One of the Unfortunate Passengers. 3" in diameter open-face pocket watch, unmarked, but Swiss-made with the original movement. Replacement crystal. Silver on brass. The numerals on the dial are Hebrew letters. The back cover has an embossed design showing Moses holding the Ten Commandments. Hands nearly all rusted away with discoloration to the dial. The movement likewise exhibits rusting, the result of immersion in salt water. This watch was the property of Cenai Kantor, a Russian immigrant who took passage on the maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic in April 1912. He was traveling to New York with his wife, Miriam, a fellow passenger and survivor of the sinking. She was placed in lifeboat #12. Unfortunately, he lost his life when the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank in frigid waters while approaching Canada. His body was retrieved and sent back to his widow in New York, clothed only in his underwear. With the assistance of the Legal Aid Society, she was able to trace down his other property (clothing, Russian passport, notebook, assortment of money from Russia, Germany and England, wallets, telescope, corkscrew, "Silver watch and strap." These were forwarded to the White Star Line offices in New York and handed over to her on May 24, 1912.
The watch is sold with a Letter of Provenance from the consignor, a descendant of Mr. Kantor, along with copies of letters issued in the aftermath of the tragedy, sent to Miriam Kantor.
