Transportation: Large Albumen of "Commodore Vanderbilt" Locomotive. 13" x 10" albumen on the original 17" x 13" mount depicting the "Commodore Vanderbilt" locomotive outside the Tremont House hotel in Boston. The engineer and the fireman pose in the cab and tender. Likely taken to commemorate the train's completion in 1870 by the American Locomotive Company for use on the Hudson River Railway (later part of the New York Central). Vanderbilt built his fortune in steamships (hence the nickname "Commodore") and later railroads. Tight border tear at bottom, not affecting image. Light toning to mount with some spotting in sky. Very fine overall. One of the best locomotive photos we have seen!Update: Correct information. Rensselaer & Saratoga Railroad #37

Builder #629. Later became Delaware and Hudson #132 and subsequently #416.
