    Description

    R. M. S. Titanic: Shavings From Her Steel Hull. Most unusual display of close to seventy pieces of metal shavings removed from a detached hull section of the R. M. S. Titanic. The pieces seem to be imbedded in a glass or Lucite plaque measuring 3" x 3.5", placed within a wooden frame. Although a historical relic, given the proper backlighting, it rises to the level of modern art. The story behind this item is an interesting one. In 1996, three crates of steel plates from the Titanic were sent to the University of Missouri-Rolla for metallurgical testing to determine their quality and brittleness. These plates were salvaged from different areas of the debris field. The plates were repeatedly hit with a hammer to test for brittleness as well as subjected to bending to determine tensile strength. These shavings were acquired from the University of Missouri-Rolla Metallurgical Lab in May 2000, as attested to in an accompanying Certificate of Authenticity. They subsequently were gifted to Jeff Burgess, a member of the Titanic Historical Society, in 2002. A Letter of Provenance dated July 2016 describes the line of ownership from Gary Skorupsky to Jeff Burgess to Burgess's widow, Judith, thence to the current consignor via auction. The 1996 newspaper article describing the testing of the samples is included.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
