R. M. Forbes & Co., La Vaca, Texas, Schooner Sophia Godfrey Bill of Lading, Port of Indianola, April 9, 1872, to Port of New York, one page, 8.5" x 10". The verso also includes a brief description of the voyage. Very good condition with original folds, toning, and some paper loss in center of document.

It was at the Port of Indianola that Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels landed with a group of German immigrants in 1843. This was also the point where the meeting was held to fix the new boundary, after the 1848 peace treaty with Mexico. An important and bustling port with cattle and hide exports, military supplies for the army in the state of Texas came through Indianola from 1850 until 1861, and Jefferson Davis even brought camels into the state through the port! Two hurricanes, some ten years apart, (the first in 1875), destroyed the town and any hopes for a lasting, safe settlement. Indianola memorabilia is rare. From the Taking of Texas Collection.
