PROSPECTUS FOR THE TRANS–CONTINENTAL RAILROAD.. This 40-page booklet was issued in anticipation of the completion of the transcontinental railroad, occurring eight months after the September 25, 1868 publication date. It is titled "Union Pacific Railroad. Across the Continent West from Omaha, Nebraska. 1868" A red overprint on the bottom reads "From C. E. Fuller & Co., Bankers & Agents of the U.P.R.R. Co., No. 2 State Street, Boston, Mass." The cover is printed in black and brown and shows an allegorical scene representing the meeting of America and Asia, thus fulfilling the ancient dream of a direct route to the spices and treasures of the Far East. A train passes in the background beneath a symbolic sunrise. The title page boasts "an unbroken line from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean... eight hundred and twenty miles completed Sept. 20, 1868." The booklet further touts the profit potential of the project and encourages purchase of "first mortgage bonds." Faint vertical fold, minor chipping to lower corners; overall quite clean. A graphic memento of the romance and folklore surrounding the Transcontinental Railroad.
