Navy HGU-20/P Clamshell Flight Helmet. An interesting design, made by Robert Shaw Controls Company and flight tested by the Navy from 1965 to 1971; it was also tested and used by the Air Force for the B-1A program. A modified version, called the Launch Entry Helmet, was used by NASA in the early Space Shuttle missions. It features a clear visor, a gray visor, ear cups, and an internal boom microphone; a single hose provides both electronic and oxygen connections. There is a "U. S. Navy" decal on the top front, but no other markings. This was designed as an integrated head protection helmet with an oxygen breathing system built-in, eliminating the need for a separate mask and providing improved retention under windblast. For all its advantages, there were problems with the design- it was too heavy during high-G maneuvers, the peripheral vision was inadequate, and there was a tendency to leak around the rubber seal. It was tested but eventually rejected making this a very scarce and desirable helmet to collectors. An example of this helmet is in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. Very fine condition with minor wear.
