    Description

    Ship's Log Book for the Ship Sophia. Engrossed on the title page: "Journal of a Voyage From Boston to Calcutta in the Ship Sophia of Boston commanded by Nicholas Tillinghast Snell, Begun April 14th 1841 and terminated February 12th 1842." Approximately 130 pages, 8.25" x 13". With cardboard wrappers and including a map of the Atlantic Ocean. Manifests for both the out voyage to Calcutta and return to Boston, are sewn in. The entry for August 7, 1841 details the arrest of several crew members taking shore leave at Calcutta without permission. Beautifully accomplished with copious notes and reports in a clear, fine hand. Moderate wear to spine, wrappers and corners. Mild toning within.


    More Information:

    Sophia was a second class ship (E1) of 243 tons. Captain Snell was a master mariner from Westport, Massachusetts.
