    Description

Panama Canal: Photo Album with Roy Chapman Andrews Material. Group of items related to Roy Chapman Andrews (1884-1960), noted explorer, adventurer, naturalist and Director of the American Museum of Natural History. It includes a pair of letters written from Hiri-yao, Japan in 1917 and from Bombay [n.y.] as well as a signed portrait of Chapman playing polo in Peking on July 4, 1927. One of the letters was written by Chapman and signed "Ray" while the other letter was written by a different person. The key item is a large 14" x 10" album housing snapshots that mostly document the building of the Panama Canal. There are 154 photographs, each measuring 3.25" x 5.5". They document a trip that began in Boston and continued via ocean liner (the S. S. "Advance") down to New York and thence to Panama. The vast majority of the photos were taken in Panama. Many are identified or accompanied by captions. The album has mildew damage throughout, affecting many of the photos to one degree or another; however, most remain in decent shape.
