Legendary Space Artist Robert McCall "Blast Off" Original Watercolor Painting, 1973. If you've ever visited the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., you have seen the work of Robert McCall. His mural depicting man's conquest of the moon covers an entire wall on the main floor. If you went to see the motion picture 2001: A Space Odyssey, maybe it was the movie posters featuring paintings by Robert McCall that drew you into the theatre. In the early 1960s, McCall illustrated a series of LIFE magazine articles about the future of space travel. He was chosen by NASA to document the progress of the U.S. space program first hand and has been present at nearly every NASA launch since. He was even in the running (along with Walter Cronkite) to be chosen as the first civilian in space. That position eventually went to Christa McAuliffe (in the ill-fated STS51 mission). McCall has designed more than two-dozen U.S. postage stamps and his artwork has been used in many major motion pictures.

The painting offered here is titled "Blast Off" and is dated 1973, the year that saw all four Skylab missions take off from the launch pad. It is very dramatic with a stark contrast between the black sky and the white rocket plume and resulting smoke highlighted with grays and golds. Sight size is 21.5" x 28.5" and it is double matted and handsomely framed in complementary colors to 28.25" x 36". A wonderful painting from the dean of space artists that will be a great addition to any collection.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
