Jay Gould was a leading railroad developer and speculator in the 19th century. He left a controversial legacy as a result of his rather aggressive business practices and his involvement in the Tammany Hall scandal. Gould acquired the MKT in 1880 and the railway remained intermittently profitable until its merger with the Missouri, Pacific Railway Company in 1989.
