George Francis Train: English Street Railway Ephemera. Delightful archive of ephemera related to George Francis Train and his circa 1860-1861 project of building the first street railway car system in England. This material was collected by Train personally and placed in a souvenir album. The material was personally annotated by Train with comments on the events or personalities involved. The project met with some fierce opposition from established interests, especially those who operated horse-and-carriage vehicles. They particularly objected to the raised rails used to accommodate Train's streetcars. Eventually, the steel rails were replaced with rails that were flush with the pavement and did not constitute a hazard. There are ten album leaves with nineteen items pasted or tipped in (two items are loose). These include photographs, handbills, banquet menus, sketches made by Train, calling cards, etc. Some of the banquets were meant to celebrate the opening of one of Train's railway lines. Train stayed in England from 1860 to 1862, acting as an advocate for the Union cause at the outbreak of the Civil War. We include a modern re-print of an 1860 book detailing the "First Street Railway Banquet in the Old World. Birkenhead 1860" plus some research material on Train. Some great ephemera in this lot.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
