Gemini 6A Flown Heat Shield Plug in Capsule-Shaped Display. A segment, approximately 0.75" in diameter x 1.75" long, sealed in a plastic representation of the spacecraft itself, overall 2.875" diameter x 4.75" long. This is mounted to a triangular-shaped base, 4" x 5.25" overall, underneath which is engraved: "Heat Shield of/ First Rendezvous/ In Space/ W. M. Schirra Jr./ T. P. Stafford/ 12-15&16-1965/ G.T. #6". This is, in turn, mounted to a triangular 6.25" x 7.25" wooden base. This plug was drilled from the capsule's heat shield, an integral and important part of the space capsule, helping to ensure its safe reentry into Earth's atmosphere. Gemini 6A was actually launched eleven days after Gemini 7 achieving the first manned rendezvous with the other spacecraft, at one point coming as close as one foot. A great relic from this important flight. Scarce. Near excellent condition with just some wear on the base.
