Description

Galveston, La Porte and Houston Railway Company $1,000 Bond 1895. One page with two pages of coupons (all present). Vertical 10" x 14". Printed by Franklin Bank Note Company, New York. Endorsed by the company's secretary and president. With two vignettes: one a railroad scene; the other an African-American picking cotton. Company seal stamped in blind. Pin-prick hole, old fold creases; else about fine.

Chartered in 1892 as the La Porte, Houston and Northern Railroad Company, the name was changed in 1895 upon acquisition of the North Galveston, Houston and Kansas City Railroad Company. Like most small railroads of the period, the company went into receivership after barely a year of operation. The line was sold under foreclosure and ultimately conveyed to the Galveston, Houston and Northern Railway Company 1899.
