Awarded for "heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight".Ed White II: His Distinguished Flying Cross Medal and Ten Mustard Seeds Flown on Gemini 4, Directly From His Family's Collection. This important military medal was awarded to Lt. Col. Edward H. White II for his groundbreaking Gemini 4 flight and first-ever U.S. extra-vehicular activity, June 3-7, 1965. The medal is in its original case with matching lapel pin and chest ribbon; it is engraved on the reverse: "Edward H White II". This was awarded posthumously to his widow, Pat, at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., on April 21, 1967. Included with the decoration is: a copy of Air Force Special Order GB-136 listing those astronauts awarded DFCs at that time; a 10" x 8" B&W official photo taken at the ceremony; and a signed letter of transmittal for the photo from Air Force Chief of Staff John McConnell.
Ten mustard seeds are included with this lot in a Fliteline case. These seeds, a symbol of White's religious faith, were in a pocket of White's spacesuit while he walked in space. In the Bible's New Testament, there are several examples of Jesus using the mustard seed as a model of the growth of the Kingdom of God from an extremely tiny seed to the largest of all garden plants, as well as an example of the tiny amount of faith needed to accomplish much. Also included is a photocopy of a letter from noted preacher and author Norman Vincent Peale, dated just before the Gemini 4 mission. It reads, in part: "You don't need to take a mustard seed with you as a symbol of your faith; you have the faith itself, and the inner sturdiness that will carry you through this tremendous and rewarding experience." All items in excellent condition.
