Description

Buzz Aldrin's 1951 West Point Senior Term Paper. Titled "Factors Affecting Our Policy Toward Japan", this fascinating typescript offers a unique view of Buzz Aldrin as a student at the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he graduated third in his class in 1951. The 14-page paper is titled on the front of the blue folder "FACTORS AFFECTING OUR POLICY TOWARD JAPAN Cadet Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr. Section 1C." The title page offers the same information and is dated April 16, 1951, Aldrin's final term at West Point. The term paper, typed on thin 8.5" x 11" typing paper, reads in part, "Do we need Japan? Since we must economize on troops in Asia in favor of Europe, Japanese manpower and bases would aid greatly in furthering our objectives. Can Japan be trusted? Considering recent cooperation under the occupation and the inherent self-interest of Japan in her security, it seems that we could not go wrong in establishing Japanese ground forces subject to U. N. observation. What of the danger to the U. S. in the future? Without subs, planes and a war-making potential, these being solely controlled by the U. S., there seems little basis for fear of Japan for quite some time." Shortly after graduating, Buzz Aldrin would gain first-hand knowledge of East Asia, where he flew 66 mission as a jet fighter pilot for the Air Force in the Korean War. The pages are a bit toned, to be expected from typewriter paper of the era. The covers remain spotless, however, on this wonderful and unique term paper from the final semester of Buzz Aldrin's West Point career. From the personal collection of Dr. Buzz Aldrin and accompanied by a signed Letter of Authenticity from him.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
