Aviation: 1850 Advertising Poster for an Assent by Female Aeronaut Margaret Graham in the Balloon Victoria and Albert. The headline of this original July 11, 1850 poster reads, "THE ONLY FEMALE AERONAUT, ACCOMPANIED BY A PARTY OF YOUNG LADIES IN THE NEW BALLOON...." The 10" x 30" poster also gives the time (7:00 PM), the place (Royal Gardens, Vauxhall), and that the assent was "UNDER THE PATRONAGE OF HER MOST GRACIOUS MAJESTY THE QUEEN". Mrs. Margaret Graham and her husband George made numerous balloon ascents in Britain between the 1820s and the 1850s. Many of these ended in disaster, and the Grahams became as famous for their good fortune in surviving their adventures as for their aeronautical skills. By the 1840s ascents by George Graham had become rare, but Margaret continued with her aeronautical career, proclaiming herself 'The Only English Female Aeronaut'. Despite many near fatal ballooning accidents, she survived to die in her bed in 1864. Light aging; a few tatters on lower margin; upper section attached to heavier weight paper backing; the poster is separated into two pieces with Mrs. Graham's name at the fold and thus missing the lower part of her name. Rare subject matter and worthy of restoration.
