Amelia Earhart's Aviator Goggles It was said that Amelia Earhart, America's favorite Aviatrix, did not like to wear the traditional "high-bred aviation togs," but instead preferred to wear a suit or dress and a close fitting hat. She always put her goggles on at the end of the runway, and took them off as soon as she landed. Aviators never skimped on their goggles; distance, depth perception, glare, and haze suppression were matters of life and death in the air. These goggles are tinted dark green and are lined with wool. Much of the wool has come off over the years, but they still display amazingly. The goggles fasten in the back with a metal clasp. These were given to Mariette Lydis by Earhart on one of her trips overseas, along with her flyers jacket and a flying cap (Both of which are featured in this auction). Lydis would keep these items close to her heart her entire life, and they were even included in her estate and will after her death. One can scarcely fathom what was seen through goggles like these; her first solo flight, her record breaking height attempts, her transatlantic flight? Looking through her eyes is something few of us can dream of, but here we have a small chance to see what she did. This lot is one which will fascinate and intrigue many people. Earhart, a country born tomboy, captured the hearts of an aviation crazed nation, with her tenacity and courage. Capture her goggles today!
