Description
"D. B. Cooper" 1971 Ransom Money. Unknown Series $20 Federal Reserve Note. Certified and encapsulated by PCGS Currency with a custom insert picturing the 1971 artist's sketch of the sunglasses-wearing skyjacker. Found by eight-year-old Brian Ingram along the banks of the Columbia River in Washington on February 10, 1980, this is one of the only known group of currency notes that can be linked to the historic and infamous event. All the notes from this group were damaged by their exposure to the elements. This present example is approximately 0.8" x 0.8" with small portions of a serial number and the "TWENTY" denomination.
The D. B. Cooper Story (XIV): Twenty-eight years after finding the notes, Brian Ingram decided to keep one of them as a souvenir and allow the rest to be sold to eager collectors through Heritage Auction Galleries. He personally hand carried the bill fragments to PCGS Headquarters in California where a team of experts certified and encapsulated them into protective archival storage holders with a distinctive "D. B. Cooper" insert (no grades were assigned due to the deteriorated condition of the notes). "This is the only identifiable group of United States currency that can be directly linked to such an historic and infamous event. The only comparison of such significance would possibly be the Lindbergh ransom money, but none of those notes is known to have survived for collectors today," said PCGS Currency President Jason W. Bradford. "Fifteen of the $20 denomination bills will be offered to the public for the first time in th[is] auction. His decision to sell the notes was made several weeks before the recent discovery of what may be the skyjacker's parachute. The coincidental timing couldn't be better," said Steve Ivy, Co-Chairman of Heritage and a long-time paper money collector.
