Carried aboard the Winnie Mae "around the world in eight days"

[Aviation] Wiley Post and Harold Gatty Signed 1931 Cover Flown on the World's First Circumnavigational Flight in Framed Display, with Vintage Photos. A philatelic cover postmarked at Mineola, New York, both on June 21 (two days before take-off) and July 1, 1931 (date of return). At upper left is printed: "Round The World Flight of the 'Winnie Mae'" and beneath are the black ink signatures: "Wiley Post" as Pilot and "Harold Gatty" as Navigator. There are additional stamps at Berlin and other stops along the route. The cover is triple matted and framed to an overall 15" x 17.5" with a photo and an engraved plaque that reads: "Carried Aboard/ The Round The World Flight/ By Wiley Post, June 1931". Included with this lot are two small vintage original backstamped photos by Brooklyn photographer Rudy Arnold, both of Post posed with his plane. Very fine.

Prior to this historic flight in the Lockheed Vega dubbed Winnie Mae, the circumnavigation record was held by the Graf Zeppelin in a time of twenty-one days. Flying from Roosevelt Field on Long Island, Post and Gatty made stops at Harbour Grace, Flintshire, Hanover (twice), Berlin, Moscow, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Blagoveshchensk, Khabarovsk, Nome, Fairbanks, Edmonton, and Cleveland before returning to Roosevelt Field. Their new record time was eight days and fifteen hours. They received a hero's welcome at many stops along the route not unlike Charles Lindbergh's reception a few years earlier.
