First National Air Mail Week, May 1938

[Aviation] Orville Wright and First Flight Witness John T. Moore Signed 1938 Airmail Covers. As follows.
    (1) A cover cancelled at Dayton, Ohio, on May 19, 1938, with a stamped cachet celebrating National Air Mail Week at the home of the Wright Brothers. It is signed in black ink: "Orville Wright" diagonally at upper left. Addressed, lightly toned, very fine.
    (2) A similar cover, this one cancelled at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on the same day with a cachet celebrating National Air Mail Week at the site of the Wright Brothers first flight. It is signed in black ink: "John T Moore" at upper left. At this point in time, he was the only person still alive that witnessed the Wright brothers' first flight in December 1903 as a teenager who just happened to be there, looking for crabs. Addressed, very fine.
A nice and historic pair for displaying together.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
