[Aviation] Amelia Earhart Signed Cover Flown in the Beech-Nut Autogiro at Grand Rapids, Michigan, September 9, 1931, in Framed Display with Original Advertising Folder. A philatelic cover with a 5ยข Airmail stamp affixed and bearing a colorful pasted-on cachet with an image of the Beech-Nut Gum Autogiro and the printed text: "Amelia Earhart/ At Grand Rapids Airport" along with the date and place. "Pitcairn Autogiro NC 10780" is written in an unknown hand and it is signed in black ink: "Amelia Earhart". Triple matted and framed to an overall 14.5" x 18" with a colorful advertising brochure (front covers) for Beech-Nut as was handed out to the crowd that day and an engraved plaque that reads: "Flown By/ Amelia Earhart". A handsome display piece from a little-know era of Earhart's aviation career. Included is a photocopy of the inside of the brochure and an interesting article regarding her appearance at Grand Rapids. Very fine.

A Spanish engineer and aeronautical enthusiast named Juan de la Cierva invented the first successful rotocraft in 1923 which he named the autogiro. In 1929, Harold F. Pitcairn purchased the U.S. rights to manufacture the invention. On December 19, 1930, Amelia Earhart took a fifteen-minute lesson and became the first woman Autogiro pilot. Shortly thereafter, Beech-Nut Gum and Earhart came to terms on an advertising campaign and an Autogiro was ordered for her use in a transcontinental flight in June 1931. A later advertising tour was to Michigan in September where this cover was flown and signed.
