Description

Apollo 15 Flown Larger-Size United Nations Flag Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Command Module Pilot Al Worden, Signed and Certified, with Signed LOA. An 11.5" x 7.75" cloth U.N. flag that flew aboard Apollo 15, July 26-August 7, 1971, on the fourth manned mission to land on the moon. This flag stayed in the Command Module Endeavour with Al Worden in lunar orbit while Dave Scott and Jim Irwin flew the Lunar Module Falcon to the surface of the moon. Worden has signed in the lower right corner: "Flown to the Moon on Apollo 15 Al Worden CMP". Space-flown United Nations flags are uncommon; this is only the second example Heritage has offered. Its scarcity, coupled with its displayable large size, makes this a particularly desirable item. Excellent condition, stored folded.

Included with this lot is a letter of authenticity signed "Al Worden" on his letterhead, stating (in part): "I hereby certify that the United Nations flag (8x12) included with this letter and marked with my signature and flight number went to the moon aboard Apollo 15 in the spacecraft 'ENDEAVOUR'..."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
