    Description

Apollo 14 Mission Used Safety Line. 1" x .25" and 3.75" x 2.5" mounted. A piece of safety line used in the Apollo 14 lunar mission. The line is encapsulated on a card, which reads: "Presented in appreciation of your role in Apollo 14's success. This small portion of the lunar surface safety line was carried by the astronauts on the moon's surface February 5-6, 1971." The card shows a picture of the liftoff of the Apollo 14 mission, and the names and dates of the participants, Alan B. Shepard, Jr., Edgar D. Mitchell, and Stuart A. Roosa. Apollo 14 was the third mission in which humans walked on the lunar surface and returned to Earth. On February 5, 1971, two astronauts (Apollo 14 Commander Alan B. Shepard, Jr. and LM pilot Edgar D. Mitchell) landed near Fra Mauro crater on the moon in the Lunar Module (LM) while the Command and Service Module (CSM) continued in lunar orbit. During their stay on the moon, the astronauts set up scientific experiments, took photographs, and collected lunar samples. The LM took off from the moon on February 6 and the astronauts returned to Earth on February 9.
