Description

    Carried to the lunar surface on Apollo 14.

    Apollo 14 Lunar Module Flown Safety Line Swatch with Original Letter of Transmittal. A small section of a white woven material, approximately 1" x 0.25", laminated to a 3.75" x 2.5" color photo of the Apollo 14 launch. The text printed above reads: "Presented in appreciation of your role in/ Apollo 14's success. This small portion of/ the lunar surface safety line was carried/ by the astronauts on the moon's surface/ February 5-6, 1971". On the verso is found the NASA logo and address along with the printed name: "Richard C. Proffitt". The accompanying letter is written to Proffitt and reads, in part: "In appreciation for your outstanding support of the Apollo 14 mission we the crewmen would like to present you with this piece of equipment carried on board the spacecraft during its flight to the moon and back..." Beneath are the printed facsimile signatures of the three astronauts. Excellent condition. From the estate of NASA engineer Richard C. Proffitt, Launch Complex 39 Operations Manager from 1969 to 1976.
