Apollo 14 Lunar Module Flown American Flag and Embroidered Mission Insignia Patch. A 5.25" x 4" cloth U.S. flag and a 3.875" wide embroidered mission insignia mounted to a mat and framed to an overall 20.75" x 16.75". This text is printed on the mat: "This Flag and Patch Traveled to the Moon aboard the Apollo 14 Spacecraft." Mounted next to the flown items is a typed letter on Apollo 14 stationery, dated September 14, 1971, signed "Alvin H. Bishop, Jr." to Tommy Amato. It states, in part: "This will certify that the American flag and Apollo patch accompanying this letter were carried on the Apollo XIV mission, launched from Cape Kennedy, Florida, on January 31, 1971. This flag and patch landed at Fra Mauro, Moon, on February 5, 1971, and were returned to the planet Earth on February 9, 1971, with the successful completion of the Apollo XIV mission... I do further certify that this flag and patch are known to me to be the exact ones placed aboard the Apollo XIV spacecraft, having been secretly marked before the flight. That mark, known only to me, was verified when the items were returned to my custody by Lt. Col. Stuart A. Roosa, Apollo XIV astronaut." Bishop was a longtime member of the space community, working at NASA in Cape Canaveral for a number of years; he later joined the Hughes Corporation in Las Vegas where he often entertained astronauts (and show business celebrities) at this home there. Tommy Amato managed, conducted, and performed with Wayne Newton for fifteen years. He also managed many other notable entertainers such as Red Skelton and Al Martino and performed for presidents and royalty. This framed display is in excellent condition.
