DescriptionApollo 14 Flown State Flag of Massachusetts Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Edgar Mitchell, Signed and Certified, with Signed LOA. This 6.125" x 4.5" silk flag was carried aboard Apollo 14, the third successful moon landing mission, with crewmembers Alan Shepard, Stuart Roosa, and Edgar Mitchell, January 31-February 9, 1971. This flag design, official since 1908, bears the state motto: "Ense Petit Placidam, Sub Libertate Quietem (By the Sword We Seek Peace, But Peace Only Under Liberty). Dr. Mitchell has signed the flag at the bottom: "Edgar Mitchell/ Flown to the moon on Kittyhawk, Apollo 14". Excellent condition with just some barely-noticeable soiling at the edges, mentioned for accuracy.
Included with this lot is a letter of authenticity signed "Edgar Mitchell" on his personal letterhead, stating (in part): "This silk state flag of Massachusetts was flown to the moon aboard the Apollo 14 command module Kittyhawk, January 31 to February 9, 1991 [sic] during the third lunar landing at Fra Mauro... Alan Shepard, Stewart [sic] and I carried a small group of national and state flags during our mission. I have authenticated that this flag was flown on Apollo 14 and signed on the bottom margin."
