DescriptionApollo 14 Flown State Flag of Illinois Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Edgar Mitchell, Signed and Certified, with Signed LOA. A 5.875" x 4" cloth Illinois flag that traveled to the moon on Apollo 14 in 1971 with crewmembers Shepard, Roosa, and Mitchell. The design depicts a bald eagle perched on a rock grasping a shield and holding a ribbon in its mouth with the words "State Sovereignty, National Union". Dr. Mitchell has signed the flag: "Flown to the moon on Apollo 14/ Edgar Mitchell". Excellent condition with one light vertical crease at left.
Included with this lot is a letter of authenticity signed "Edgar Mitchell" on his personal letterhead, stating (in part): "This letter certifies that the accompanying 4" x 6" flag of Illinois was carried in my personal preference kit (PPK) from January 31 to February 9, 1971 during the Apollo 14 mission..."
