[Colonial America] 1763 Charter Hiring the Sloop Humbird for a Voyage to Martinico (Martinique), West Indies. Two pages, 7.5" x 12.5", Newport, Rhode Island, April 13, 1763. Modest foxing, minor flaws, and folds, else fine. This charter spells out the terms by which Newport merchants Solomon Townsend and William Richardson hire the sloop Humbird, owned by one Joseph Scott, likewise of Newport, for a voyage to the West Indies. Though the charter doesn't specify the type of cargo the Humbird will be conveying from the West Indies, it would almost certainly have been sugar, molasses, or sadly, African slaves. The sloop Humbird was a vessel of "about Sixty Tons", and Joseph Scott valued her at "eight thousand pounds in good Bills of Publick Credit of Said Colony Old Tenor... If said Sloop shall be foundered at Sea castaway taken by the Enemy froze confiscated or any otherwise lost or destroyed during the Voyage".
