    3c Dull Red, Unofficial Perforation 12½ (11 var.), tied on cover to New York by 1857 Chicago town cancel, some inconsequential age and wear related faults not affecting the stamp, otherwise Fine to Very Fine and rare usage.

    The unofficial perf variety, known as the "Chicago Perf", represents the first U.S. perforated stamps using a true perforating machine. These were made by Elijah W. Hadley using a machine of his own construction.
