    World's First Attempted Transatlantic Airmail

1919, 3¢ Red Brown, "Hawker" Air Post Overprint (C1), well centered, tied by weak strike April St. John's machine cancel on flown cover to London. The stamp, having floated loose during its stay in the waters of the Atlantic, has been replaced slightly out of position, as have all the stamps on the few intact surviving covers. The reverse bears a British Post Office seal with a May 30 c.d.s. and the cover is open on three sides for display, Very Fine.

    Scott $28,000

    Expertization: 2009 PF Certificate

AN EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLE OF THIS RARE FLOWN COVER. ONLY 200 STAMPS WERE OVERPRINTED AND ONLY 95 OF THOSE WERE USED.

This flight was aborted as the pilot, Lt. H.G. Hawker performed a controlled crash landing in the Atlantic after 14½ hours in the air. Hawker and navigator Cmdr. K.M. Mackenzie-Grieve, were rescued by the Danish steamship Mary. Unfortunately, the Mary's radio was out of order, so until she landed in Scotland six days later, Hawker and Mackenzie-Grieve were assumed lost at sea.

The mail bag remained in the water until salvaged by an east-bound ship five weeks later. The mail was ultimately delivered to London by ship, reaching the Post Office on May 30, all somewhat the worse for its five-week immersion in the Atlantic.
