    1863, March 11, Cumberland, Me. to Raymond, Me. Unsealed envelope with pre-printed circular postmark with the day, "11", inserted in manuscript, franked with an 1861 1¢ Blue (63), natural straight edge at right, with a neat "1863" manuscript cancel, Fine to Very Fine.

    The postmaster of Cumberland, Me. from 1853 to 1870 was David Gray. He was also a printer and maintained his print shop on the same premises as the post office. In the late 1850s Gray experimented with postmarking and canceling the mail with a printing press, apparently in an attempt to expedite mail handling.. The process, however, proved too tedious and he settled for pre-printing the town mark and address on mass mailings..
