    Description

Printed Circular to St. Petersburg, Russia

1858, August 12, Charleston, S.C. to St. Petersburg, Russia. Folded circular franked with a pair of 1857 1¢ Type V (24) tied by Charleston c.d.s., red French entry c.d.s. Aug 28, manuscript "2/½" (silbergroschen) Prussian debit to Russia, Aachen entry c.d.s., Sept 29 and magenta manuscript "19" (kopeks due) on reverse; repaired tear at left, stamps "lifted and replaced...causing staining" [PF], otherwise a Very Fine example of this unique destination.

    Estimate $2,500-$3,000

THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE ONE-CENT 1857 ISSUE ON A CIRCULAR TO RUSSIA.

    Expertization: 2004 PF Certificate

The Prussian 2½ silbergroschen debit to Russia (about 9 kopeks) was probably composed of 2s "foreign" transit fees to Prussia and ½s Prussian printed matter fee. The Russians apparently added 10 kopeks internal fee for a total of 19 kopeks due from the recipient.
