Printed Circular from Manila to Honolulu Via San Francisco

1855, May 4, Manila, Philippines to Honolulu, Sandwich Islands. Two printed circulars from a Manila Importer/Exporter folded into a single packet, handstamped "Forwarded by G.B. Post & Co. San Francisco" hexagon and "Per Bark 'Yankee'" straightline, Very Fine and choice.

    Estimate $4,000-$5,000

    Provenance: Honolulu Advertiser Collection

This packet was carried by private ship from Manila to San Francisco via the "Great Circle Route", which crosses the Pacific 2000 miles north of the Hawaiian Islands. In San Francisco it was given to G.B. Post & Co. the forwarding agent for The Regular Despatch Line (RDL), which operated solely between San Francisco and Hawaii. Though the RDL did not have a government mail contract, the Postmaster of Honolulu and his San Francisco agents favored the RDL. One of the ships in the service of the RDL was the Bark Yankee. The "Per Bark 'Yankee'" handstamp was likely applied by one of Post's agents.
