    Description

    Printed Sheets - One-Cent Each
Printed Sheets were first defined in the U.S. Postal Laws of 1794

1809, New Bedford, Mass. to Taunton, Mass. two covers from Col. Benjamin Lincoln to General Thomas Lincoln: the first is a folded letter postmarked red "New Bedford Ma, Feb 2" c.d.s. enclosing five military resignation forms [not present] asking that the General sign the blank forms and return them, manuscript "five printed sheets" and with ms. rate "13". The second is a folded address sheet postmarked red "PAID" and ms. "3" with notation "three printed sheets". Both covers fresh and Very Fine. Surviving examples of the printed sheet rates are quite rare with fewer than an half dozen examples recorded.

    Estimate $1,000-$1,500

A PERFECT PAIR OF COVERS TO ILLUSTRATE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE LETTER RATE AND THE PRINTED MATTER RATE.

The 13¢ rate on the first cover consisted of 8¢ for the letter plus 1¢ each for the five printed sheets; the 3¢ on the second cover was simply 1¢ each for the three enclosed forms.
