    A SUPERB NEVER HINGED 15¢ AMERICAN

    15c Red Orange (189), centered with mathematical precision amid large, beautifully balanced margins with vibrant color and pristine, never hinged original gum; fresh and choice and absolutely Superb. Scott $1,000.

    THE CENTERING, COLOR, IMPRESSION, PAPER AND GUM ALL CAME TOGETHER ON THIS SUPERB GEM- ONE OF THREE GRADED 98 BY THE PSE TO DATE, WITH ONLY ONE HIGHER.

    The soft paper used by the American Bank Note Company is very prone to damage; the orange color often oxidizes; centering was absolutely not a priority for the production values at the time; a lot can happen to gum in 120 years. The fact that this example survived in this quality is quite a feat indeed.
