    Description

1¢ Purple (53/53var), full sheet of 50 from state IIb of the overprinting plate, position 48 is the missing "3" variety (53a) and other constant varieties occur on positions 1, 5, 6, 18, 19 and 30; also the overprint is slightly diagonal, resulting in partially split overprints at positions 41-42 and 46-48; in addition the sheet has an embossed paper seal affixed in the left margin that is signed "Genuine, Jos. M. Oat, P.M. Gen'l"; original gum, never hinged, positions 3 and 48 (the error) each have a small hole, likely the unfortunate result of some form of filing system, otherwise fresh and Fine to Very Fine. A very rare and perhaps unique sheet; according to Wallace Beardsley, only 75 sheets were produced from state IIb of the plate.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
