    Description

    Highest Graded Mint #1a

#1a, 1847, 5c Dark Brown, SUP 98J PSE. (Original Gum - Previously Hinged). Bottom right sheet corner margin single, Position 100R, believed to be the unique mint example that unquestionably proves its plate position. Outstanding in stature, this important stamp is ex-Newbury (1962, Lot 521 where this stamp sold for $800), and boasts an overall freshness and quality that makes it a prime focus for the crème-de-la-crème of collections. Aside from the simply monstrous margins right and bottom as a result of the sheet margins, this beauty sports large to huge margins top and left. Sumptuous color that has hardly, if at all, been affected by its 160+ years, on what is clearly bluish paper, with original gum that has been but extremely lightly kissed at the top by previous hinging, and shows what appears to be a small spot of short gumming at the bottom center well below the stamp. Of particular interest is that considering how delicate and porous the paper used for this issue is by nature, this exquisite masterpiece is sound, say for only trivial tiny specks of gum penetration are evident... a far cry less than could, or even should be expected. A truly Superb showpiece that will likely not be seen in the marketplace again for many a year to come. PSE - Graded Certificate. While this is but one of the two highest graded examples (as of 10/08), its uniqueness places it in a class of its own...
