    Silkote Mint Sheet of 100

#1033a, 1954, 2c Carmine Rose on Silkote Paper. (Original Gum - Never Hinged). A complete lower left Plate# 25061 pane of 100 on experimental "Silkote" paper, a product of the S.D. Warren Co. paper manufacturer with mills at Westbrook, Maine. A total of 125 press sheets (500 panes) were quietly printed by the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing in the late fall of 1954, experimentally in nature, in an attempt to overcome issues related to the extreme dampening necessary when printing on the then current sulphite paper known as "Oxford"; the "Silkote" paper had a special surface that made it unnecessary for extreme dampness to be applied to the paper in the printing process... the result, a sharper, clearer impression. Because the "Silkote" paper did not require the extreme dampness that the "Oxford" paper did, there was less shrinkage, causing the sheets printed on this experimental paper to be somewhat misaligned on the perforating machines which were set to account for the shrinkage experienced with the "Oxford" paper, the net result being that the stamps from the "Silkote" sheets tended to be relatively poorly centered, with but few rare exceptions. ...The pane presented here is amongst the finest, if not the finest of these rare exceptions. The majority of the individual stamps included within this particular pane tend to be amongst the finest examples we have seen of the "Silkote" issues, with high grading potentials abounding throughout the pane, which is in pristine, fresh off the presses condition. A true condition rarity for this experimental issue, aficionados' of high grade stamps would most assuredly agree that this Extremely Fine pane is well undercatalogued at the meager $35,850 that Scott values the pane basis a plate block and singles... and with an especially conservative estimate, let the feeding frenzy begin; 2008 PSE Certificate...
