Description

Alan Bean Signed Limited Edition, #382/550, "Right Stuff Field Geologists" Print, also Signed by Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt, from the Calle Family Collection. A 29.25" x 23.5" color lithograph issued in 2001 from a 1993 acrylic painting by Bean, signed beneath the image in pencil: "Gene Cernan", "Alan Bean", and "Harrison H. Schmitt". It pictures the Apollo 17 moonwalkers on the lunar surface. Excellent.

Bean discusses this artwork: "Apollo was primarily about landing on the Moon and returning safely in response to an international technological and political challenge. Even before this goal was attained, NASA was laying the foundations to use Apollo for scientific exploration in the tradition of Lewis and Clark and other American explorations. One question for Apollo was, 'Do we take test pilots and teach them field geology or do we take field geologists and teach them to fly?' The answer, as in the past, was to create a team that included both operators who understood the scientific issues and scientists who understood operational issues. This image of Apollo XVII Commander and skilled Naval Aviator Eugene A. Cernan handing another sample bag to Lunar Module Pilot and experienced field geologist Harrison H. 'Jack' Schmitt on the floor of the Valley of Taurus-Littrow represents the culmination of this exploration philosophy. On December 14, 1972, when Gene and Jack left the lunar surface, they carried over 740 lunar samples with a total weight of over 240 pounds- more than any other mission-and a new understanding of the origin, history and resources of the Moon."
