"Founding Fathers" of the American space program
NASA Legends: Large Formal Portrait Signed by Apollo Program
Director Sam C. Phillips, KSC Director Kurt H. Debus, MSC Director
Robert R. Gilruth, and Marshall Space Flight Center Director
Wernher von Braun. A wonderful 14" x 11" matte finish B&W
photo taken at the Kennedy Space Center during the Apollo 9 Flight
Readiness Review in early February 1969. George E. Mueller is
pictured (far left) but he has not signed. The four others have all
signed neatly in black ink along the wide bottom margin. Very
desirable. Excellent. These four men were all instrumental figures in the development and success of the American space program. Sam C. Phillips, often credited with the successful management of the Apollo program, played a pivotal role in overseeing its progress and ensuring the United States achieved its goal of landing a man on the moon before the end of the 1960s. Kurt H. Debus was a key figure in the establishment of NASA's Kennedy Space Center, serving as its first director and laying the groundwork for America's space launch operations. Robert R. Gilruth, as the first director of NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center (now Johnson Space Center), was crucial in guiding the Mercury and Gemini projects as well as the Apollo missions, shaping the early phase of U.S. human spaceflight. Wernher von Braun, a rocket scientist transferred from Germany to the U.S. after World War II, was instrumental in the development of the Saturn V rocket, the launch vehicle that enabled humans to reach the moon. Each of these men contributed unique expertise and leadership, driving technological advancements and operational excellence that solidified the United States' prominence in space exploration.
