Apollo 8 Vintage "Type One" B&W "Earthrise" Photo, the Original Release, Image 68-H-1401, December 29, 1968. Released just two days after splashdown, this is the photo that captured the world's imagination. A 10" x 8" glossy with full purple ink press caption on the verso (transcribed below). This is the first time Heritage Auctions has offered this rare original B&W "Earthrise." Light wear. Very fine in appearance.

"MANNED SPACECRAFT CENTER. HOUSTON TEXAS--APOLLO 8 EARTH VIEW. This view of the rising earth greeted the Apollo 8 astronauts as they came from behind the moon after the lunar orbit insertion burn. Earth is about five degrees above the horizon in this photograph. The unnamed surface features in the foreground are near the eastern limb of the moon as viewed from earth. The lunar horizon is approximately 780 kilometers from the spacecraft. Width of the photograph area at the horizon is about 176 kilometers. On the earth 240,000 statute miles away, the sunset terminator bisects Africa."
