The First Image Taken by Humans of the Whole Earth

Apollo 8 Vintage NASA "Red Number" Color Photo, Image AS8-16-2593: The Western Hemisphere from Space. An original chromogenic 10" x 8" print taken from 18,000 miles; North America is at top right. On Kodak fiber-based paper bearing the "A Kodak Paper" watermark and attached caption on the verso. Very desirable. Discoloration at left side from processing, still quite a great display item. Otherwise very fine.

This photograph was taken by astronaut Bill Anders. The image captures a striking view of nearly the entire Western Hemisphere, from the mouth of the St. Lawrence River, including nearby Newfoundland, extending to Tierra del Fuego at the southern tip of South America. South is at the top in this image. This image holds immense historical significance. It dramatically illustrates our planet's beauty and fragility, and it played a pivotal role in influencing public perception of space exploration. It represents a defining moment in human history when we first looked back at our own planet from another celestial body. From The Vintage Photo Archive of NASA Engineer Scott H Simpkinson.
