Description

Apollo 16 Color Photo Crew-Signed on the Mat. A 9" x 7.5" color photo (NASA image AS16-113-18339) of John Young on the lunar surface jumping in the air as he salutes the nearby American flag. It is mounted to a mat board of 13.5" x 10.5" (sight size) and framed to an overall 15" x 12". On the mat beneath the photo are the signatures of the crew: "John Young", "Ken Mattingly", and "Charlie Duke". The photo has faded moderately as is often the case with these and there is some light toning on the mat around the photo. The signatures are clear and bold. Fine condition.

On the verso of the frame is the handwritten provenance of this piece. It was originally awarded to Congressman Earle Cabell who, from the 89th to the 92nd Congresses, was on the U.S. House Committee on Science and Technology and the Manned Space Flight Subcommittee (1965-1973). Cabell later gifted this to a friend and former speechwriter. Interestingly, Cabell was mayor of Dallas when John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963.
