Apollo 13: Three Vintage NASA "Red Number" Color Photos. All are original chromogenic 10" x 8" prints on Kodak fiber-based paper bearing the "A Kodak Paper" watermark on the verso. As follows.S-70-34850: A photograph of astronaut Jack Swigert during his suit-up on April 11, 1970, in preparation for the Apollo 13 mission. A purple ink press caption on verso. Top left corner bumped. Very fine.
S-70-34854: This photo, captured on April 11, 1970, depicts the colossal Saturn V rocket carrying the Apollo 13 spacecraft skyward from Launch Complex 39 at Kennedy Space Center. A purple ink press caption on verso. Minor corner bumps, barely noticeable small crease. Very fine.
S-70-35139: A photo from April 13, 1970, picturing Gene Kranz at his console in the Mission Operations Control Room (MOCR) at the Manned Spacecraft Center (MSC); Fred Haise is seen on the large monitor screen. A purple ink press caption on verso. Bottom corner bumps, otherwise excellent.
The Apollo 13 mission, launched on April 11, 1970, was the third crewed mission intended to land on the moon. However, two days into the mission, an oxygen tank in the service module failed, causing a critical failure of the spacecraft's systems. The crew, led by Commander James Lovell, was forced to orbit the moon, and return to Earth using the lunar module as a lifeboat. Despite severe challenges and limited resources, the mission was a "successful failure" due to the safe return of the crew, demonstrating NASA's ingenuity and crisis management skills.
