Description

Apollo 13 Signed Reentry Color Photograph with Parachute Swatch, 9.5" x 6.25" matted to 10.25" x 7.5", inscribed on the upper mat "To Joe Garino Sr/ with sincere best wishes/ Jack Swigert/ Apollo 13." The lightly faded photo depicts the Apollo 13 spacecraft as it heads toward a splashdown in the South Pacific Ocean on April 17, 1970. Affixed to the lower right corner in a clear 3" x 4" bag is a portion of the actual parachute labeled in an unknown hand "Part of Apollo 13 Chute." Swigert was Command Module pilot on Apollo 13. The mission was aborted due to an explosion aboard the Command Module. It was Swigert who, after he saw a warning light accompanying the explosion, said, "Houston, we've had a problem here." Jack Swigert was elected to Congress in 1982 but died a week before he was to be sworn in. Framed to 12" x 9". From the collection of renowned former physical trainer of the astronauts Joe Garino. This lot is accompanied by a signed certificate of authentication from Garino verifying its provenance.
